Corner Stone "is a collaborative program providing essential daily living support to cancer patients, cancer survivors, and their immediate families". It provides: a) complimentary Y membership to cancer survivors (those diagnosed within the past 5 years) and their families for one year (with extended options for those still receiving treatment); b) access to all of YMCA member benefits and specialized programs to help those with cancer and recovering from cancer build strength and a sense of community; c) a complimentary week of summer camp for all children in the family enrolled in the program; d) a schedule of special drop-in babysitting for parents who are currently in treatment; and e) a non-clinical environment where patients and their families can feel comfortable and supported.
In September, Lorraine Sacco and Liana Boghosian represented the Reid R Sacco AYA Cancer Alliance in interviews about the Alliance mission and activities and what has inspired them. Quotes from their interviews, as well as their portraits, can be seen displayed in YMCA of the North Shore facilities (e.g., Beverly, Haverhill, Gloucester, Ipswich)).
In early November, Lorraine hosted a meeting between the Corner Stone Program and the Reid R Sacco AYA Cancer Program/Clinic at Tufts. In that meeting Scott Hitchcock (Chief Operating Officer, YMCA North Shore), Dr Susan Parsons (Director, Tuft Medical Center Reid R Sacco AYA Cancer Program) and Rachael Murphy-Banks (Program Manager, Director, Tuft Medical Center Reid R Sacco AYA Cancer Program) discussed how the two organizations could complement one another in aiding in the health and well-being of AYAs diagnosed with cancer. The collaboration will start immediately with the AYA Program providing outreach materials designed to bring awareness about the AYA Program at Tufts and about AYA Cancer and AYA Cancer Survivorship overall. From the patient population now being treated at the AYA Cancer Clinic, Rachael and Dr. Parsons will be identifying patients who could benefit from one or more of the specialized programs and member benefits offered by the YMCA Corner Stone Program.
